Young children need to familiarize with basic and essential math concepts before they start grade 1. During my teaching practicum in a grade 1 classroom, I observed many of the students struggled with math concepts as basic as counting to 10 and patterning. Those students also had difficulty in reading. Not having well-established math concepts slowed down their learning in other subjects such as science and surprisingly arts.
